Special recognition to

Alta Sierra Jazz Band "A" for taking 1st Place in their division at the Reno Jazz Festival on April 24, 2010.

Alta Sierra "A" also did an amazing job their first time at the prestigious MNGJF on April 4th, 2010! Ben Christiansen and Aaron G got soloists awards! And, the rhythm section got an award for outstanding rhythm section!! Awesome job ASI!

The Buchanan Area Jazz program just keeps on making CUSD history!!!!!

Job well done, Mr. Lucckesi!

A BIG THANK YOU to all those that came out and supported jazz in the Buchanan Area by buying delicious Baskin-Robbins Ice cream donated by Baskin-Robbins at Clovis & Herndon!! WE KILLED IT & brought in $583 which I handed over to Mr. Lucckesi on Friday. I'm so happy to still be able to make a difference for jazz at Buchanan. It gave so much to my son while he was there, it's the least I can do....but $583 ain't at all bad!!

BHS "A" & ASI "A" will be competing @ the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, April 9, 10 & 11, 2010

Well, BHS "A" band did it again! This year CUSD history has been made again ASI "A" made the cut as well! They made the line up for the Next Gen competition in April. For those that do not know about this unique festival, BHS "A" won 2nd in their division in 07 which earned them the esteemed privilege and honor of performing at the 50th Anniversary of the HUGE Monterey Jazz Festival in Sept. 2007. Aside from the band winning, individual students were awarded college scholarships and prizes. Go HERE to see what the Monterey Jazz festival is all about! In April 2008 BHS "A" won 1st place and were invited back to play on the main stage at the 51st Annual Monterey Jazz Festival in September 2008. Please show your support for these bands and hopefully Mr. Lucckesi and his students can make CUSD history again and have both a high school and an intermediate school playing at the big Monterey Jazz Festival in Sept. 10!

We look forward to hearing you at the City Jazz concert Thursday evening, April 3rd at 7:00 p.m. What an honor to be chosen for this band, and an even bigger honor to be on the same stage and play with special guest trombonist, Andy Martin. General admission is $10, and $8 for jazzfresno members, students and seniors. More info is available at FCC's website.

Well, BHS "A" band & Combo "A" did it again! They made the line up for the Next Gen competition in April. "As magnificent and large as this hall is, it can never hold the person of Paul Shaghoian" were the words from Paul Lucckesi as he shared a few words on the stage during the concert.
The concert hall at the new Clovis North High School was officially named after Buchanan's former Director of Jazz Studies, mentor and true friend to many, Mr. Paul A. Shaghoian!! We are so happy and proud to see Mr. Shaghoian honored in this way.

Monterey Jazz Festival - BUCHANAN "A" BAND MADE BUCHANAN and C.U.S.D. HISTORY - AGAIN!!
For those that missed it, BHS "A" band performed at the 50th Anniversary of the Monterey Jazz Festival on Sept. 23, 2007. They ROCKED the house! My best estimation is the Bill Berry Stage building seated about 500 who after hearing our band play, gave them a standing ovation complete with cheers, whistles and even some hollering! I'm sure that was one performance the band & Mr. Lucckesi will never forget. To see pics of the festival, click on over there: PHOTOS. While on the site, click around awhile and you'll find even more pictures, sovenir clothing, and articles galore about all the performers that were there that weekend. They also have an extensive music library as well as bio's and info on probably any jazz musician in the world! The Fresno Bee and CUSD Today both ran articles, including pictures, of our band at this very special event !!

Buchanan Jazz Band "A" has another accomplishment to be proud of-they were on KMPH's Great Day on Friday, May 16th! Click here to see one of their performances.
Was is the perfect weather? Or, was it the numerous earthquakes throughout the weekend? NO!!!! It was Buchanan Jazz Band "A" and Combo "A" that rocked the house at the Reno Jazz Festival! A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Buchanan "A" and Combo "A" band members for placing first in the High School Division! Another big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to Sean Shackelford for getting the High School Division's "Outstanding Trombonist" award! Buchanan "A" Band and Buchanan Combo made CUSD history again!! If you haven't read it yet, you need to get a copy of the JUNE 2008 Downbeat Magazine and turn to page 102!. Buchanan "A" Band won "Outstanding Performance" and Sean Richey received honors for original songs, "40 Days & 40 Nights", and "Peter's Crow".
